True to his word, an invitation for lunch came not too long after their initial meeting. Nothing could have indicated that he would have held his word, saying they should get lunch sometime, but Yuina was a bit shocked when she'd received his message... But in a good way... He was very kind after all, it would be nice to be outside of work...[break][break]
Lunch came second though, as it seemed first he invited her out to a patch of flower fields that were outside of Verdanturf town, the heralding of the spring season as everything was in full bloom and blossom. A walk sounded nice, some fresh air... No obligations, work, missions, examples to set as a ranger... With a new friend.[break][break]
Given the not so typically cold weather the region had been having over the winter, it was still a bit crisp outside, and Yuina was glad she decided still to wear a sweater as she huddled a bit tighter within herself against a breeze that came through, glancing again at the message Duncan had sent her, his invitation for lunch... She smiled, it would be nice to see him again.

Just one day.[break][break]

The text message comes in. A little lunch date. It's a little more than friends, a little less than lovers. Tis the season, and a little more sightseeing helps the heart grow fonder. His smile always stays on his face, an edge to it that was hard to pin down. Was it sadness? Was it anger? Was it nothing at all?[break][break]

The little walk through the coming spring season, as the flowers would sit in full bloom, has him smile, as he holds his bouquet. White and purple hyacinth.[break][break]

The purple far outweigh the white, yet the white still blooms.[break][break]

"Seems I caught y'u out the exhibit, eh bonnie?" he flirts already in that deep northern Galarian accent, his smile hiding away that edge, as he brushes his hand towards the bouquet.[break][break]

"Stunn'n, Yu'na. Truly stunn'n." He can't just not remark on how she looks.

Standing in wait, Yuina hadn't realized how hard it was to find a day like this, where she wasn't working or out on a job for the ranger organization, or fighting for the fate of the region... Though in spite of having a pause for any of the regular things that could take up a day, she just wished she could have one day away from her thoughts, away from that shadow that only grew darker behind her... Unless that wish made her forget again...[break][break]
Her amber eyes were cast out into the colorful wild flowers that spread across the grass, lining the walkway path in all the colors of the rainbow, and she was lost in that melancholy for only a moment, startled just a bit at Duncan's prominent voice coming towards her. She turned quickly on her heel, looking up to meet his gaze.[break][break]
"For today, yeah, I could get away," she smiled, though a bit flustered at being startled. He smiled at her, the same way he always did it seemed, holding out a beautiful bouquet of flowers... Vibrant purple and gleaming white... And in offering to her, he gave her a few words more...[break][break]
Her cheeks began to turn crimson already... The flowers alone were enough to give her pause, but...[break][break]
She blinked down, there was no hope in hiding her blushing tone as she gingerly reached for the beautiful flowers...[break]
"They're... They're beautiful, thank you... You didn't have to," she smiled softly, taking the bundle into her hands. It was a small, common gesture perhaps, but she had never been presented with a gift this way before...[break][break]
"How have you been doing, Duncan? Make any other museum trips lately," Yuina asked after a moment, looking up to him, carefully holding the flowers in her arms now. If she didn't, she probably wouldn't be able to stop looking at the flowers...

There's a pause in his swagger. Subtle, but present if one looks hard enough. The edge to his smile deepens. Like a curve, it turns back into the smile, a centimeter less than it was. Yuina was a smart lass. She probably could see it.[break][break]

For today, she got away. "Same'ere, bonnie. Got out and ov'r here. Good choice in spot." Her cheeks are red. His cheeks haven't deepened at all in color or tone, he's in control.[break][break]

The only one who can hear the cracking is him.[break][break]

"Beautiful woman needs a flow'r. A bouquet from an admir'r is jus'as good, eh lass?" He doesn't need to justify why he did it, but every girl or guy deserves a flower from someone. If it were his way, he'd have a flower to everyone.[break][break]

But if one looks too close at the flowers, they can read a story in the picks. A dead language of flowers, dead but not gone.[break][break]

Her question comes, and so he goes "Right as rain, Yu'na," His facial expression that same practiced smile, the same he wore before. "Not in particular. But I did want to see you again." He begins walking forward.[break][break]

Why?[break][break]

Who was to say. His reasons are hidden, and in that brief moment Yuina could see his back, a step forward for him, she might see his shoulders sagging downwards. Not in relaxation, but something else.

It wasn't as if they had spent any more than a couple of minutes with each other initially when they'd met, it was only at her museum, in passing, only a handful of moments... But as Yuina looked up at Duncan, cradling the bouquet so closely in her arms, there was something only slightly different...? But how could she reasonably say so, after having only met him once before? She had nothing to base it off of, not really...[break][break]
"It is, isn't it? The wild flowers are beautiful... I've never seen so many before," she offered, a smile, meeting his, maybe?[break]
Then he continued on, words that she wasn't sure she'd ever heard before... Admirations... That she wondered... If anyone had for her in her past life... He was too kind, too generous in his words, and there were no deeper shades of red for her face to turn to, that he wanted to see her again... After only one meeting? After only a handful of moments?[break][break]
Her shadows loomed behind her still... She shouldn't drag anyone else into the darkness...[break][break]
"That's... I, you're too kind, Duncan... I'm," she stammered, she couldn't find the words, she had to blink down, glance away, anything to try and get herself together... And then he turned to begin their walk, his height stalking away from her, his shoulders... Was she reading too much into things? Was he different this time? Was it any of her business...?[break][break]
Yuina wasn't the prying type, she couldn't be, not when she had her own shadows she tried to hide every day, her own lies... Duncan could very well have something within his own life that was... His own, a truth, a lie... Something that... Was nice to escape from, if only for a little bit...[break][break]
Yuina turned to walk with him, catching up to his stride, and while she didn't turn to look up at him, and certainly didn't look to change her tone in a way that could imply sympathy for something he may not want to divulge, she only looked to start their day together.[break][break]
"So I got to talk about some of my interests at the museum," she started, her voice soft, inviting.[break]
"Tell me a little bit about some of the things you're interested in Duncan," a normal question, for a normal conversation, for a normal day away from... everything.

With his back to her, his face is hidden. The silver bangs quietly hung low upon his face. Not even his lips were visible. The walk is slow, his back bends lower, his gaze fastened forward, his stature large. But still, it bends lower and lower. Deeper on blood-built imaginary weight.[break][break]

"Nonsense, Yu'na. I jus' like what I see." He says it with his face turned away. She can't see the way its said, but the tone denotes nothing is wrong at all.[break][break]

He's slow enough to let her catch up, and with it, by his side. His face again, appears with smile, but his other eye is obscured by hair, his gaze not fully shown to Yuina.[break][break]

Her voice is soft. It invites him to the door, a doorway he knows he can pass through, each step no matter the invitation like stepping on broken glass. Hard to avoid it when the soles of his shoes are made from it.[break][break]

"My interests?" he hears her, he does. But when he turns to look at her, his face gives it away for a second. Longing. And then his eye closes, and he smiles ear-to-ear. Genuine. "Stranger th'n fiction," it sounds sad, how his northern Galarian tone just says something so normal.[break][break]

"What I'm interested in... really." he stops. He turns to her, and his face is still smiling.[break][break]

"I don't know how to answer that, Yu'na."[break][break]

No one knew that side. Not @estelle, not Julien Demassieux, not Elise Calcifet, or Remiel Calcifet. No one knew.[break][break]

Catching up to walk beside him, Yuina smiles a bit as he slowed his stride so she could match him, he was so much taller than she was, she wouldn't have been able to keep up otherwise. His admirations kept a near constant flush of pink beneath her amber eyes, she couldn't help it, but when she posed her question, an attempt to make the day as normal as possible for the both of them, she almost stopped.[break][break]
Something cast over his eyes as he thought, and though he smiled, his answer was heartbreaking... He didn't know how to answer what he was interested in? She... could relate... Yuina knew better than most what it was to be a shell of a person, a shadow clung to the wall unable to separate itself from the darkness... What it felt like to be somebody, but nobody at the same time...[break][break]
She herself was a patchwork quilt of a person, picking up pieces as they were given to her, adding them to a collage that was supposed to be beautiful... But it wasn't her, she wasn't herself, and she wasn't sure if she would ever be... Yuina couldn't wish this upon anyone else...[break]
Her gaze met his, she tried to hide her hurt, he didn't need sympathy to make something feel normal, she couldn't pry... Anything that could be said, 'what do you mean?', 'sure you have interests', would be forcing something that might not be there at all...[break][break]
Instead, Yuina looked out to the wild flowers again, a thoughtful hum...[break]
"When you came to visit the museum for the first time, you said you came to see my Hisuian Exhibit specifically? Are there other points in history that you like to look at," Yuina offered, another smile, whether he knew and wasn't going to say for one reason or another, or maybe he didn't know at all, Yuina only wanted to be kind... She knew how empty life could feel sometimes...

Emptiness.[break][break]

Broken glass all around.[break][break]

When she speaks, the subject changes. While his face is unseen, his heart isn't. She's the first woman in this region, so far, that sees deeper. That cuts the first layer of him. And for the first time, Duncan feels that similar pain. He empathizes, because when he sees her, she's just as hurt as he is. Just as broken, fragmented. He takes a step closer. The fields of flowers feeling worlds apart.[break][break]

"I did," he starts, a step closer towards her. "-then I met a bonnie that made me question everyth'ng." He tries to hide it on his face, and no matter how he, or she smiled, they both just felt similar.[break][break]

"I like hist'ry enough, but it nev'r was my favorite subject."[break][break]

He's no historian. He met Yuina in the museum, in her Hisuian Exhibit. Happenstance. Just that. It was something else that kept him there. He turns back ahead.[break][break]

"Yuina," he stares. The complexity of a facial expression, riddled with turmoil superimposed over kindness. It bends deeper, the troubled sag of a smile. He says her name right as easily as he breathed. "I'd 'ave loved ta' see the rest of'em with y'u," he begins, only to pound the breaks so hard, he got emotional whiplash.[break][break]

He would have.[break][break]

Such is his curse.

They stopped in their walking, Duncan's long strides coming to a still as he turned to face her. She looked up at him, meeting his eyes, Yuina could feel his hurt, just like she felt hers, it was so similar... And she hated that for him.[break]
She knew the weight, the toll that it took, to carry on with the shell of who she was to the outside world. Carefully curated to make her appear normal, whole, like she belonged amongst those that she knew in this life. But it only became heavier and more crushing everyday. Why did he know that pain too? Why were they both being crushed by an emptiness that was all consuming?[break][break]
"...Duncan I- I'm sorry if I've said something, I don't...," Yuina offered first as he stepped towards her, she wasn't sure what he meant, that she made him question everything? She wasn't trying to hurt him at all, or make things more difficult for him after they'd met?[break][break]
He said her name, pronounced with no trouble or fumbling, he had been trying very hard when they first met, maybe he was practicing...[break]

With a shake of his head, Duncan stares at the flowers around them. "Y'uve done nothin' wrong, Yuina." Melancholy hangs in the air. It washes over him, it pushes down on his shoulders.[break][break]

"Y'ure just like me. Aren't you?" His northern Galarian tone low, a golden eye peering into her very soul, wanting to look in, but seeing the mirror that it was. His facial expression doesn't sour, it merely stands still at a broken, practiced smile.[break][break]

"Ma'names Duncan Calcifet. I'm the Duke of Hammerlocke," he laments quietly, a sadness upon the wind as it blows next to him, pushing his hair. He doesn't let her see much more into him. He holds fast, his smile telling all he needs to tell.[break][break]

He pauses, reaching into his jacket. To fish for his engagement ring to his fiancee.[break][break]

If he stays, he will regret it. Honesty. "I wanted to take y'u out. The hot lil' librarian look y'u had, the way y'ur cheeks heat up at a compliment. Y'ur passion inspired me. I wanted to see y'u more. Captivated, I chose to forget for a moment that I was a Duke," he starts, as he holds the ring inbetween his fingers, showing her see the source of that pain.[break][break]

"But I can't. The Duke is betrothed to anoth'r."[break][break]

The pain in his smile belies the façade he shows.

The cold remnants of winter winds, the soft sway of the wild flowers, everything falls still around them as Duncan speaks. His question gives Yuina pause, they mirror each other's pain, it's difficult to ignore. But the pain of his smile, his admission of his name, his lot in life... Yuina can only listen.[break][break]
His gaze holds her amber eyes, red brushing beneath them and across her cheeks... She hadn't realized that she had garnered so much of his attention... That he saw her that way. She didn't think anyone saw her that way... and she almost hated herself for it. She couldn't take anyone into her shadows with her, it wasn't fair to him...[break][break]
This wasn't fair to both of them, the hands they were dealt in life. And as Yuina glanced at the ring he held, a symbol of his betrothal, it became clear. That was his life, the way it was handed to him... But it was a life he didn't want, he was trapped, and so he was hiding away from that life... If only for a day.[break][break]
"Duncan...," Yuina murmered, but she wasn't angry, or upset... She was hurt, but it was his same hurt... She didn't blame him for wanting a different life than what he was given.[break]
"That's who you are... but it's not who you want to be," she spoke, looking back up to him. She understood, likely more than anyone might.[break][break]
"And you're here, looking for any one moment that takes you away from that life... but it's not enough, these singular moments don't fill in how empty you feel, do they," she wondered, speaking so clearly from a place of understanding, from a place of relating to exactly how he felt... Because she was just like him.

Mirrors and broken glass are all around them both. They share a pain together. A Pain Split between them. Every reddening of her cheeks just feels like more glass embed inside him. He can feel the ire. He wasn't mad at his betrothed, he didn't hate her.[break][break]

But right now, he hated where he was. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.[break][break]

Yuina understood that. This hot little librarian-type, who in one day, had him forget Calcifet, and remember that there was a man inside of that. He was a Duke. He can't help but make the sad curve of a smile to her, as she regales everything he feels. One after another, thrown before his feet. It's painful. She must know from experience.[break][break]

Like a reflection.[break][break]

"Et tu, Yu'na? Yu're a smart woman," he flubs the pronunciation on purpose. His only eye revealed to her has a tear that cascades downwards, as he takes a step closer to her. He reaches down, the taller, thicker accented man briefly away from her face. And if allowed, he places one kiss to her cheek. "Love smart bonnies, myself."[break][break]

But he pulls back, and turns his back to Yuina. He takes a step away.[break][break]

"F'r what it's worth, bonnie. That exhibit," he starts and begins to walk away from her.[break][break]

"W'nderful. Take care of it... and y'urself."[break][break]

The broken glass digs further into his feet with each step. He doesn't turn to let Yuina see his eyes again. And when he's far enough away, he's wiping at his eyes, his lip trembling.
